Size-range analysis of diesel soot with ultra-small angle X-ray scattering
نویسندگان
چکیده
Carbonaceous soot produced in a small diesel engine test facility was investigated with ultra-small-angle X-ray scattering. Three soot samples produced using a reference diesel fuel and the reference fuel plus two oxygenate additives were investigated. The presence of objects at three typical size ranges, i.e., aggregates, primary particles, and subunits, was observed. By studying soot powders and pellets from pressed powder, a separation of scattering contributions from aggregates and primary particles was possible. The scattering curves of soot from oxygenated diesel show significant differences between samples obtained under idle and load conditions. Soot from regular diesel fuel did not show such differences. 2004 The Combustion Institute. Published by Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.

Measurements of Diesel Spray Droplet Size with Ultra-Small Angle X-Ray Scattering
The strong scattering of visible light by spray droplets has severely impeded the ability of optical diagnostics to probe dense sprays. X-rays interact more weakly with spray droplets than visible light; as such, multiple scattering effects are rarely important in the x-ray regime. As such, x-ray radiography (which relies on absorption) and x-ray phase-contrast imaging (which relies on subtle r...
متن کاملCombining Small Angle and Wide Angle X- Ray Scattering Techniques for In-situ Studies of Particle Formation Processes in Reactive Systems Using a New Detector Prototype
Introduction To date there are still many unknowns on how particles are formed from gas phase reactive systems such as combustion. It is possible to study particles in-situ using X-ray scattering techniques: Separate applications have shown that the size distribution of soot particle can be measured using Small-Angle X-ray Scattering (SAXS) [1-4] and particle structure with Wide-Angle X-ray Sca...
متن کاملEffect of Biodiesel Blends on Diesel Particulate Filter Performance; SAE Paper No. 2006-01-3280
Tests of ultra-low sulfur diesel blended with soy-biodiesel at 5% and 20% were conducted using a 2002 model year Cummins ISB engine (with exhaust gas recirculation) that had been retrofitted with a passively regenerated catalyzed diesel particulate filter (DPF). Results show that on average, the DPF balance point temperature (BPT) is 45°C and 112°C lower for B20 blends and neat biodiesel, respe...
متن کاملApplication of small angle X-ray scattering (SAXS) for differentiation between normal and cancerous breast tissues
ABSTRACT Background: Coherent scattering leads to diffraction effects and especially constructive interferences. Theseinterferences carry some information about the molecular structure of the tissue. As breast cancer isthe most widespread cancer in women, this project evaluated the application of small angleX-ray scattering (SAXS) for differentiation between normal and cancerous breast tissues....
متن کاملStudy on Mechanical and microcrystalline on hybrid nanocomposites by WAXS
The aim of this work is to probe the influence of nanoclay and turmeric spends content on microcrystalline of vinyl ester hybrid nanocomposites. A series of vinyl ester hybrid nanocomposites have been fabricated with varying amounts of TS viz., 0, 2.5, 5, 7.5 and 10 % w/w along with 2% nanoclay. The microcrystalline parameters such as crystallite size and lattice strain of vinyl ester hybrid na...
